Between the three different chlor-alkali production technologies, membrane is: the most modern, the least energy-demanding, and produces caustic with a higher level of purity. Today membrane technology is the only technology adopted for new installations.

In the last decade, De Nora collaborated first with ThyssenKrupp Electrolysis GmbH and then with its joint venture company, Thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers (tkUCE), now thyssenkrupp nucera, in developing the most innovative membrane cell technologies (BM Generation 6 and nx - BiTAC). Concurrently De Nora developed its proprietary anode and

cathode coating formulations- able to sustain the high design current densities of modern membrane electrolyzers, providing: superior performances in terms of voltage savings (specific energy consumption), gas and caustic soda quality, and longevity.
